Wendy McNiven

What years were you at camp, and in what capacity?

1957 - about '65 (except ’60) - camper; 1968? – counsellor.

I coordinated out-trips.

Any other Ouareau connections (aunts, sisters, mom)?

My mother Dora (Dorothea) Millar McNiven attended probably in 1930’s; cousins Papadopoulos, plus Helen and Francesca Ross

Tell us about some of your fondest memories

Running everywhere all the time, singing assemblies, serving meals to other campers. I loved crafts, all the singing, being the ‘lead Aunt' in Pirates of Penzance (“And we are his sisters and his cousins and his aunts, his sisters and his cousins and his aunts” - this might have been my only line!)

What did camp teach you? What did you learn at camp?

Camp taught me so many skills - boating, canoe, swimming, crafts - and that I was shy and got homesick easily!

Thanks to camp…..

My water-related skills are good and I have confidence in myself in physical ways and know lots of songs!

Tell us a little about your family, career and hobbies

I live on Vancouver Island (Courtenay) with my spouse, about 3 hours’ drive from the grandchild.  In my retirement I sing with a choir, and play keyboard in a sing-along group that goes to some of the local old-people facilities (when not in covid-times), I’m into word-puzzles and other puzzles, and love to spend time outdoors - gardening, skiing, walking, cycling, doing tai chi.
